Around 7 out of 10 Americans use Social Media. They use the Social platforms to get their news, share information, connect with friends and family, and for entertainment.

Pew Research Center began tracking Social Media usage in 2005. At that time, 13 years ago, only 5% of American adults used Social Media.

Social Media usage by American adults is now at 69%. This is a marketing and advertising medium businesses can no longer ignore.

Social Media usage by adults in the USA:

  • 73% use YouTube.
  • 68% use Facebook.
  • 35% use Instagram.
  • 29% use Pinterest.
  • 25% use LinkedIn.
  • 24% use Twitter.

Pew Research Center has released their latest findings on Social Media usage.  They report that, today around seven-in-ten Americans use social media to connect with one another, engage with news content, share information, and entertain themselves.

Pew Research Center began tracking Social Media data in 2005.  At that time, only 5% of Americans were using Social Networks.  Six years later, in 2011, the number rose to 50% and today they report that 69% of the public uses some type of Social Media. read more

In the past few weeks we have spoken with a few business owners who are doing “just fine” with their current marketing and advertising efforts (or lack of effort.)  They were all established, small local businesses with a firm foundation in the community.

Thus far, a few print ads (where there is still print), coupon mailers and word-of-mouth from current loyal customers has helped to propel them forward.

They saw absolutely no need to pay for Social Media assistance, didn’t see the importance of using the sites for marketing purposes and certainly were not interested in advertising. read more

Pew Research Center has released its 2015 study on Social Media and Mobile Messaging.

“Pew Research Center is a nonpartisan fact tank that informs the public about the issues, attitudes and trends shaping America and the world. It conducts public opinion polling, demographic research, media content analysis and other empirical social science research. Pew Research Center does not take policy positions. “

Pew Research has consistently measured Social Media  over the past four years.  They have found that each of the platforms has seen a significant increase in usage by U.S. Adults.  Some Social Sites more than others.   Overall, Social Media usage remains fairly consistent. read more

A recent study was done by Edison Research regarding social media and how people are using it. 51% of Americans aged 12 and up are now on Facebook and 52% of Americans over the age of 12 have a profile on one or more social network.  If you are still trying to decide if marketing through social media is worthwhile consider these findings.

Companies are getting noticed.  One out of four Americans are following businesses, services, products and brands on social media.  80% of Facebook Users connect with a brand, product or service. read more
