Around 7 out of 10 Americans use Social Media. They use the Social platforms to get their news, share information, connect with friends and family, and for entertainment.

Pew Research Center began tracking Social Media usage in 2005. At that time, 13 years ago, only 5% of American adults used Social Media.

Social Media usage by American adults is now at 69%. This is a marketing and advertising medium businesses can no longer ignore.

Social Media usage by adults in the USA:

  • 73% use YouTube.
  • 68% use Facebook.
  • 35% use Instagram.
  • 29% use Pinterest.
  • 25% use LinkedIn.
  • 24% use Twitter.

Every 60 seconds:

  • 973,000 log in to Facebook.
  • There are 3.7 million search queries on Google.
  • 481,000 Tweets are Tweeted on Twitter.
  • 266,000 hours are watched on Netflix.
  • There are 1.1 million swipes on tinder.
  • 174,000 users scroll through the Instagram feed.
  • 4 million Snaps are created on Snapchat.
  • 3 million videos are viewed on YouTube.
  • $862,823 is spent online.
  • 18 million text messages are sent.
  • 187 million emails are sent.
  • 38 million Messages are sent.
  • 25,000 GIFs are sent via Messenger.
  • 67 voice-first devices (Amazon Echo, etc.) are shipped.
  • 375,000 apps are downloaded.

    Pew Research Center conducted a study of 2,000 U.S. adults in early 2018.  The study found that YouTube dominates Social Media use, with 73% of all U.S. adults using the platform.  Facebook garnered second place with 68% of Americans using their platform.

    Social Site use by U.S. adults ranks as follows:

    • 73% use YouTube.
    • 68% use Facebook.
    • 35% use Instagram.
    • 29% use Pinterest.
    • 27% use Snapchat.
    • 25% use LinkedIn.
    • 24% use Twitter.

    Among all U.S. adults, Facebook remains the most widely “used” platform.  Nearly three-quarters of the 68% users are using site daily.

    Social Media Marketing has become a powerful tool for increasing exposure, growing a business, and generating revenue.

    However, there is a line between using Social Media personally versus using it professionally and sometimes business owners don’t see this line.  Here are 5 things a business should not do while using Social Media to promote their products/services.

    1.    Only Posting Promotional Material

    Some business owners are under the impression that a business account on Social Media should only be used to promote their business. Your audience does not use Social Media to only get direct sales messages, while they are using Social Media to research their purchases, they want to do it on their own time.  If you are only posting sales messages and not providing useful and informative updates they will likely leave your page or turn off your updates. read more

    Domo released its fifth annual “Data Never Sleeps 5.0” infographic.  This informative visual provides insight into consumers’ behavior on the internet.

    The infographic details the data generated online every minute on the top applications and platforms.

    The report indicates that 90% of all online data was created in the last 2 years, that is 2.5 quintillion bytes of data per day.

    A Few Highlights

    Text is Tops The Data Never Sleeps 4.0 infographic from last year indicated that 3.5 million text messages were sent every minute. This is a fraction of the text messages sent this year.  15.2 million texts are sent every minute.  This is a 334% increase. read more

    Only 1 in 4 small businesses are using Instagram.  In fact, of the 3 out of 4 not using Instagram, a third don’t use any Social Media at all.

    Instagram has over 700 million monthly users, and currently has 300 million users per day.  Whether you like it or not, Instagram is here to stay and if you run a business or manage a marketing department you need to reconsider devoting some time to this network for the future success of the business.

    Marketing on Instagram is different and produces different results, but instead of focusing on driving organic traffic to your website or paying for advertising, spending some time and budget on running a daily marketing campaign on the site can benefit your business. read more

    If you own a business, run a marketing department, or rely on the public to generate sales you need to understand that Social Media marketing and advertising can no longer be ignored.

    Social Media is no longer a “technology” that we use, it is a cultural shift.

    Using Social Media to reach your consumers is no longer an option.  Traditional marketing and advertising through print ads, mailers, billboards, phone books, community business groups, networking and word-of-mouth may work for you, but your business is likely losing out on an entire group of consumers. read more

    While Instagram isn’t my “go-to” for marketing, it can be beneficial to a Marketing Strategy.  I personally love the freedom and creativity we can display for our clients with Instagram.  It makes marketing fun and interesting.

    Recently, it was announced that Instagram had better engagement (likes) and content sharing than Facebook.  Engagement with businesses on Instagram are 10 times higher than on Facebook.  While I don’t recommend using Instagram exclusively for a Marketing Strategy it can be a great tool to add to your marketing arsenal. read more
