You Better Work It!

So you finally put your Business on Facebook, after seeing everyone else with a Business Page and seeing the blue square with the ‘F’ in it everywhere you turn.  Good for you, you have just put your business on one of the most important marketing sites out there at this time.  Now what?

Just having a Facebook Page is not going to do much. Though you have the most beautifully designed Facebook Page and your Business Page has a lovely profile picture custom-made just for the Page, you have a Welcome Landing Tab as everyone has told you this is the key to getting Friends, and you figured out how to organize your Photo Strip to spotlight what you do – terrific, but this is not what is going to generate new customers or create revenue.

Once you are up on Facebook you need to “work” your Facebook Page in order for Facebook to work for you.

Most large companies are now hiring dedicated Social Media Specialists to do nothing but handle their Facebook Pages, among other social media sites.  These individuals sole responsibility is to work social media. 

Other companies hire outside Social Media Specialists to handle their sites for them, and these individuals also live and breathe social media.

If you are not interested in hiring a specialist and you chose to do it yourself, it will take time.  But unless you devote the time and keep up with your Business Page you are not utilizing the most powerful marketing tool to its fullest capacity.

As the administrator of your Business Page you must devote time to researching trends in social media as well as trends in your industry, you need to keep up with the rules and regulations of the sites and follow the rules (which change often) you will need to research relevant information to post, you will need to watch other Facebook Pages, check your own Page at least daily and commit to posting on a schedule so your Page shows consistency. These are the keys to working this marketing tool.

Facebook Friends want information, they want to be engaged and entertained.  The basis of marketing on Social Media sites is to be the “Source” for your Friends, the source of information, entertainment and the guru of your industry.

Post interesting content and your Friends will keep you on their News Feed and watch you, eventually coming to think of your business as a trusted source and a Friend.  This is where these Friends have the potential to translate into revenue.  These Friends will think of your business first when they need your service, they will also refer their Friends to you when they hear of others who need your services.

But if you don’t post and don’t inform or engage or be a Friend – they will not think of you.  If you pop up on their News Feed sporadically and they will see that you are not consistent, not committed and that you don’t really care. 

These Friends really do not care how fancy your Facebook Page is, though if you have the ability to jazz it up do it, it really does look nice!  Friends want relevant, interesting and quality information.  They need to “see” you on their News Feed.

This is the only affordable media you can advertise on where you can literally keep your business name and logo in front of the masses on a daily basis.  Powerful stuff!  But you need to actually DO this, it does not just happen by placing a Page on Facebook and posting here and there.

A few tips to do this:

  • Post at least 3 times a week, daily if you can.
  • Share relevant information – industry related tips, tricks, articles, videos, news blurbs, photos, etc.
  • Find out what is happening in the world and share – a viral video, a major catastrophe, the Cubs opening day, etc.
  • Interact with your Friends on your Page – check the Page several times a day and answer posts from Friends
  • Be your Business Page on Facebook and Like other Pages, comment and share other status posts
  • Use the “Check-In” feature and watch your Page for Check-Ins –offer Friends who check in a special deal while in your location.

In order to work Facebook so it works for you, devote time daily to your Page and your Friends.  People will notice and will know your business is not only the source of information, but that you are involved and this translates to caring. 

Show you care about your Friends – your customers – and people will notice and Facebook will actually work for you.
