53% of small businesses say that Social Media Marketing is the number 1 source for their leads, yet 47% of small businesses say that they do not have an active Facebook Page.

Increase those leads with an active Social Media presence.  Whether you aren’t posting enough, or you are posting the wrong things, here are 4 tips to help your business use Social Media correctly.

Okay, you don’t have a huge marketing budget. However, if you want to stay in business, you are going to have to figure out how to find and keep a strong customer base. Face it, if people don’t know you exist, or don’t fully understand what you are selling (and why they need it) you will not be in business for long.

The Internet is the Thing

The simple fact is that most people begin their search for a product or service on the Internet. Even as long ago as 2012, 85% of people researched products and services online before a purchase.  By 2015, 64% of all in-store sales were being influenced by Internet searches and 46% of consumers relied on Social Media to aid purchasing decisions.  Those numbers are still rising. read more

Instagram, a Facebook-owned platform has just announced new features to entice smaller businesses to advertise there.  The new “Instagram Business Tools” will allow users to talk to companies on the app, and will offer companies the opportunity to view the engagement and performance metrics for its content. Companies can also promote posts (similar to Facebook) directly through the app.

Why Should Small Businesses Care?

Instagram allows companies to showcase their products in a visually appealing way and has over 400 million monthly active users. While this number pales compared to Facebook’s 1.5 billion users, it is significant because Instagram adds even more data to Facebook’s already enormous stockpile of information on its users. This information is made available to marketers, who use it to find customers. read more

Alignable  is an online networking site where small business owners gather to make connections, build meaningful relationships and collaborate to move their businesses forward.

They recently polled more than 1,200 of their users to see how they use Facebook for marketing.  Participating companies were located in North America, with fewer than 50 employees, encompassing both business-to-business and business-to-consumer companies, with even representation.

Alignable found that Facebook was the “social network for local businesses.” It is where small and mid-sized businesses have the most success.  The top two areas of success for these businesses on Facebook are generating awareness and generating new business. read more

A few weeks ago, we were hired to do Social Media Marketing and Advertising for a small company.  As we do before taking on any new clients, we checked their website.  While it was readable on our desktop computers, it was impossible to read when we opened it on our cell phones.  It was not mobile-friendly.

During our first meeting, we warned the owners that over a year ago Google announced that it would no longer return sites that are not mobile-friendly for searches done on mobile devices. We explained that this was because so many people are using mobile devices to access websites. read more

People who keep track of things like this have dubbed Google’s newest Panda algorithm tweak Panda 4.1, although Google is quick to note that it has made several adjustments to its Panda 4.0 algorithm, as well as to its other named (and unnamed) algorithms.  They caution people not to assume that any change in search engine rank is due to only one of its algorithm changes.  They also note that ranking web pages on their search engine is a complex, ever-changing endeavor.

For the uninitiated, the Panda algorithm penalizes content that it believes offers little or no value to users.  What is new about the latest Panda update is that Google has developed new and more sophisticated signals to more accurately detect low-quality content. read more
