Meet Shoelace, Google’s New Social Networking App

After shuttering its Social Networking platforms Orkut, Google Buzz, and Google +, Google has recently announced it has plans to launch a new Social Networking app.

Introducing, Shoelace, an app that aims to bring people together in real-life, not just digitally, through common interests and activities.

What is Shoelace

“Shoelace is a mobile app that helps connect people with shared interests through in person activities. It’s great for folks who have recently moved cities or who are looking to meet others who live nearby.” (Shoelace)

The mission of Shoelace is to use technology to facilitate a real-world connection, to “tie people together based on their interests, like two laces on a shoe.”  This is done through activities Shoelace calls “Loops.”

Supercharge Your Social Life

Through hand-picked activities you prefer, you can easily find other people who share your interests.  Because it is much easier and more fun to meet new people when you have things in common.  Users can also create their own events and invite others to come along.  In addition to finding new people, users can also invite non-Shoelace users to events as well.

Users will also be able to set up profiles to share information about themselves, as well as learn more about others.  Making it easier to organize and plan events.

Hand-Picked Activities

Each day there will be hand-picked activities happening around users.  Users select topics that interest them, like dogs, sports, wine, art, books, running, etc.  Shoelace will then show users what is going on around them that day for users to participate out in the real world.

Focus on a Human Connection

Shoelace’s focus is on encouraging people to meet face-to-face.  The Shoelace app is part of a larger effort by Google to address concerns that smartphones and other modern technology are having a negative effect on mental health.

While Google hasn’t been entirely successful in the real of Social Networking, it is a nice change to see a Social Site that focuses on encouraging people to spend more time face-to-face and less time on the phone or computer.

Invitation Only

Currently Shoelace is only available in New York City.  Google’s goal is to bring Shoelace to cities across the US in the future.  Google is currently taking requests for suggestions on places to go next.  Sign-up to share your suggestions and get on the invite list when/if it launches in your area.
