Snapchat just secured its spot in the Social Media Top 3, surpassing Twitter and lining up right behind Facebook and Instagram (a Facebook owned platform.)

In just 4 years Snapchat has reached 150 million daily users.  Just 6 months ago Snapchat was reporting 110 million users.

It took Facebook 5 years to meet this milestone and currently Twitter only has 136 million daily active users.  (Though Twitter does not officially disclose daily active user numbers, they have previously stated that 44% of their 310 million active users monthly use the site daily, which equals 136 million.) read more

Snapchat is a video messaging application where users can take photos, record videos, add text and drawings, and send them to a controlled list of recipients. (Wikipedia)

Upon downloading the app users then send pictures or short video clips known as “snaps” to one or more friends.  These snaps are visible for only a few seconds.  Users can write or text over the snap with a message of their choice.

Snapchat was launched in September 2011 and in this time has grown to over 100 million active users daily.  (Social Media Today) read more

Snapchat launched in May 2014 as a way for people to send their friends images and videos that could be viewed for a very short time, and would then disappear forever.  If you are like me it may be difficult to understand the value or the allure of this application.  However, it has become an extremely popular app, and was, in fact, recently valued at $10 Billion!  So, for those who have not yet downloaded the app, and are not sure they should, here are the main features of Snapchat:

  • Snapchat is a free photo/video messaging application available on iOS (Apple) and Android smart phones. (The official app is not available on Windows phones, but third party clients have cropped up.)
  • You can only message other Snapchat members.
  • You can search for members by allowing Snapchat to view your contact list within your phone or you can search for their names within the Snapchat app.
  • You can send a still image or a video.
  • You can write over the video either using the virtual pen or typing in the caption box.
  • You can add “filters,” including the time of day, weather, and other data to the picture.
  • Once your contact opens your picture or video, it will remain available for up to 10 seconds. (You set a timer to say how long images stay live – but only up to 10 seconds and then it disappears forever.)
  • You can activate a feature called “My Story.” This will allow your contact to access the photo or video as many times as they want for up to 24 hours. After that, it’s gone.

Once you have downloaded the Snapchat app, here is a step-by-step guide to sending a Snap: read more
